This is my first blog, i never really though i'd actually have a 'blog spot' or anything, but writing down certain things really help.

it was probably around 1 o'clock and my team was refereeing a game between Magnum and Grand strand. kristen was the r1 and i was the r2 (volleyball terminology for the names of the referees. It was a pretty normal game, grand strand kept a good pace and stayed up a few point throughout the match. The Magnum coach (who i admit did not like too much at first) came up to me and asked me to watch the foot faults on the serving team... which i did. the grand strand coach would question everything we did, or did not call. i pretty much just blew him off, because hey, his team was winning, it's not that big of a deal. about 5 points after that, i called a foot fault on his team's server and awarded the point to the receiving team. he blew up saying i had no right to make that call, the line judge has to make that call, etc. the magnum coach immediately backed me up. (thank you!) i said, i have every right, okay. it's magnum's serve. i dropped it, it was one less point they won by, so what... it was now, maybe, 22-20? well, three points later while the teams are saying good game, good job, whatever, the grand strand coach decides to come confront me about that call in front of my team, magnum, and his team. it started off like this..

(me, grand strand coach, magnum coach)

you shouldn't have made that call on my server.
the game is over, oh well
no, that's not your job. the line judge should have said something and the r1 should have called it
she does have that right you can't say she doesn't she's a referee.
noooo, i have EVERY right to make that call.
the line judge wasn't paying attention
why are you still bringing this up, it was her call
...buttttt i was
the r1 wasn't paying attention either
i'll admit she wasn't i know, i'll say something to her that doesn't matter, i have every right too.....
no, no, i'm not trying to argue with you (in a sarcastic tone)
alright whatever
i'm telling you this as a referee to make you a better referee (in a sarcastic tone)
okay. sure.
your job as the r2..
okay.
stand there and try to stay out of things
okay.
**(waaaait, WHY THE HECK AM I HERE THEN!)**
you're supposed to just watch over the game and try to stay more quiet
okay.
you weren't in position
okay, wait.
it doesn't matter what position anyone was in EVERYONE saw that
well, maybe she stepped over the line, maybe she didn't, but the line judge should have called it.
ALRIGHT, whatever, bye. (i walked off)

then, guess who we played next...?
GRAND STRAND
we lost the first game 25-22, won the second 25-15, both of our teams ended up being placed in the silver bracket. i didn't know this until i turned around and saw them warming up on our court. i'll admit i was pissed, still. isabella came over and really talked it through with me and i felt better, some. then i looked over, and saw the starting score was 9-4.. amazing! how? a team turned grand strand in for using cell phones while they were refereeing. so we beat them, 25-14.. again! WOOH! but wait, guess who turned them in? oh yes, magnum! and why? because we had just beat grand strand and they could've cared less about the team they had to referee next which was the plex and magnum game. well, the magnum coach warned them that even though the game wasn't important to the referees it was important to him, they didn't listen..... so the magnum parents went and told the super visors of the gym which penalized them in a 5 point deduction in their next game, which just happened to be against us (the one that we beat them like 25-14) well, after we beat them.. that coach was pissed! he went to the super visors yelling and complaining to a whole new level. when i heard this, i HAD to follow him around. then lindsey's little sister, mallory comes up telling us that the magnum coach and grand strand coach almost got into a fight. (oh my gosh) so i went to talk to the magnum coaches, i felt horrible, i apologized, all this stuff. he reassured me it wasn't my fault and that the way he treated me was totally out of line, etc. and that the grand strand coach came and found him to tell him that the rules were meant to make things fun, not to punish the girls. therefore the magnum coach said that NO, the rules are meant to be followed!

so yeeah, the grand strand coach called the head honchos of palmetto volleyball and now i have to wait for them to call me so i can verify my side of the story and whatnot.. nice, huh?

much love,
colleen.
